Straight talking

An introduction to the jargon buster – to empshasise that we are a helpful partner who will help make your internet experience simple and easy

Connection Types
  • ADSL: A basic broadband connection using old copper phone lines. Slower and being phased out.
  • FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet): Fibre runs to a street cabinet, then copper to your home. Faster than ADSL, but not full fibre.
  • FTTP (Fibre to the Premises): Full fibre directly to your home or office. Superfast and reliable.
  • Leased Line: A private, dedicated internet line just for your business. Super reliable and fast, but more expensive.
  • Mobile Broadband: Internet via mobile networks (like 4G/5G). Great for on-the-go or rural areas.
  • SoGEA: A broadband-only service without a phone line. Uses the same tech as FTTC.
  • Router: The box that connects your home or office to the internet.
  • Modem: Converts signals from your provider into data your devices can use. Often built into your router.
  • Ethernet Cable: A cable that connects your device directly to the router for a faster, more stable connection.
  • Wi-Fi: Wireless internet connection for your devices.
  • LAN (Local Area Network): A network connecting devices in one location, like your home or office.
  • Bearer: The physical or virtual path that carries your data (e.g. fibre, copper, or wireless). Think of it as the road your internet travels on.
  • Bandwidth: The amount of data your connection can handle at once. More bandwidth = better for busy households or offices.
  • Download Speed: How fast you can get data from the internet (e.g. streaming or downloading files).
  • Upload Speed: How fast you can send data to the internet (e.g. video calls or uploading files).
  • Latency (Ping): The delay before data starts moving. Lower latency = better for gaming and video calls.
  • Mbps (Megabits per second): The unit used to measure internet speed. Higher is better.
  • Gigabit Broadband: Superfast broadband offering speeds of 1,000 Mbps or more.
  • Contention Ratio: The number of users sharing the same internet connection. A lower ratio means better performance, especially at busy times.
  • Asymmetrical Speeds: When download and upload speeds are different (e.g. faster downloads, slower uploads). Common in home broadband.
  • Symmetrical Speeds: When download and upload speeds are the same. Ideal for businesses or heavy upload users.

Data & Usage
  • Data Cap: A limit on how much data you can use per month. Unlimited plans don’t have this.
  • CG-NAT: A way for providers to share one IP address among many users. Can affect online gaming or remote access.
  • IP Address: Like your internet postcode. It identifies your device online.
  • Static IP: An IP address that doesn’t change. Useful for businesses or remote access.
  • Dynamic IP: Changes each time you connect. Standard for most home users.
  • Traffic Management: When your provider slows down certain types of traffic to keep the network running smoothly.
  • Service Level Agreement (SLA): A contract that guarantees a certain level of service (e.g. uptime or repair times).
  • VPN (Virtual Private Network): A secure, private connection over the internet. Often used to protect your data or access work systems remotely.
  • SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network): A smart way for businesses to manage multiple internet connections across different locations. It improves performance and security.
  • Buffering: When your video pauses to load more data. Usually caused by slow speeds or high usage.
  • Dropout: When your internet connection cuts out temporarily.
  • Interference: Things like walls, microwaves, or other devices can weaken your Wi-Fi signal.
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): A phone service that works over the internet instead of traditional phone lines. Used by apps like HeyLola Work.
